It’s election day in the United States, and in many ways this year seems like something out of a political thriller. So if you’re looking for an escape from reality, we’ve rounded up these gripping, thought-provoking political fiction books that were under the radar this year. Hidden Gems readers got the chance to read several of these first (and for free!) and they recommend them to anyone that loves a story with political, military and/or conspiracy elements.

World War O

World War O by James Ward

World War Offshore…it’s the biggest anti-capitalist demonstration the world has ever seen. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators spread across six continents, demanding an end to the “non-accountability of the 1%”, re-regulation of the world’s financial services, and a new era of social justice. In this fictional tale, James Ward tackles one of the most hotly-debated topics of recent times. Taxation and corporate wealth. Just what, if anything, do the rich owe to the poor?

“Author J.Ward has written a fantastic new thriller with his World War O,”writes Messages for the Soul in their 5-star review. “The story of Agent John Mordred, who is assigned to investigate pretty much a global mess. There are mass demonstrations on six continents and this only could have happened with some serious inside help. What Mordred learns along the way is pretty incredible and this was an intense read with some great twists. Loved the unique story and hope to see this as a continuing series.”

Kayak Jay writes in their 5-star review, “Probably one of the best books on the espionage area I have read, and it doesn’t involve spying, though most of the characters are working for MI6 in London. The people are warm and real and more than a little funny. The story covers the occupation of tax havens throughout the world by protestors calling attention to the use of tax havens by the rich to avoid supporting government. I was particularly struck by a comment by one of the conspirators that support for science had been lost to greed.”

China Rising

China Rising by Paul Sande

In the first year of her presidency, Barbara Anderson faces a crisis on all fronts. Suspecting that a conspiracy to unseat her is at play, she puts trusted DIA agent Lavinia Walsh into action. When her investigation reveals a tangled web of deceit that spans borders, suddenly everyone wants her dead. But Lavinia discovers that more than her safety is at stake… the entire American way of life is at risk!

“A nail biting, high octane read of international affairs beginning with the assignation of the Chinese President, and the subsequent ‘too timely’ arrest of the murderer,” writes Douglas C. Bjur in his 5-star review. “The US is impacted, and it’s go, go, go from there, with the American special agent quickly becoming in danger for her life. All the components of an international thriller are employed at their best in this thriller/mystery! Highly rated read!”

“This was a very intense action-filled thrill ride of betrayal, double-cross, spies, and even treason in multiple countries,” writes John L. in his 5-star review. “The story contained some way-out-there, I hope, science fiction ideas as well as high political intrigue as the plot unfolded like chess pieces being moved on the board. I certainly hope there might be further books with some of these same characters in the future to add to my TBR file.”

Duty of Care

Duty of Care by JC Ryan

With over 120 reviews and an impressive 4.7 star average rating on Amazon, JC Ryan brings us another fascinating fictional read in the Rex Dalton Thriller series. Readers love this type of political fiction thriller, and we can understand why.

“Another can’t put down, until the very end read!! Gotta say, I’m definitely hooked on Rex Dalton books,” writes Kindle Customer in their 5-star review. “This book goes practically around the world, as Rex, with Digger search for the truth about how his friends, including Digger’s original owner were murdered and who sanctioned the deed. A MUST READ!!”

“Even though this book is part of a series, there is enough backstory given that you could still read and enjoy this as a stand-alone,” writes PolkaDot in their 5-star review. “I started with the third book in the series and have since read the entire series. The author has created some interesting and quite believable characters. Each book reveals more about Rex and Digger, his unbelievably talented canine partner. This story started with the unthinkable — the spymaster was kidnapped. Of course, Rex became involved in the rescue efforts. This book kept my eyes glued to my Kindle hour after hour. I just couldn’t put it down. The author uncovered a new side of Rex, one that you might not have expected. You will not be offended by bad language or explicit sex. There is some violence, but the author has a way of wording the narrative so that even I can handle it. (I am the squeamish person who closes my eyes when an actor is going to be punched on a TV show.) I highly recommend this book, and I eagerly await the next one.”

Personalized Murder

Personalized Murder by Jeffrey Holt

When the Democratic President and his VP die on Inauguration Day, pathologist Jon Woodlock determines diabetes and heart failure are to blame. The grieving nation revolts when the Republican Speaker of the House is sworn into the highest office. Politicians who protest the stolen election drop dead of natural causes, followed by prominent actors and activists. Jon must find who is causing underlying disease to overtake victims on cue. Many lives, including his own, are at stake. The race is on to figure out what—and who—is behind the deaths before it’s too late, and a madman rules the world.

“The book is impossible to put down because the suspense never lets up,” writes Ladyslipper in her 5-star review. “It’s a puzzling whodunit. The characters are quirky and unique with the foul mouthed vice president’s wife Sylvie being my favorite. No way would I have predicted the outcome of this tale, it kept me firmly gripped from beginning to end, definitely a good page turner, and the final chapter was so surprising I wanted more.”

“I love to discover awesome unknown writers and Jeffrey Holt is a gem,” writes JWalch in his 5-star review. “Halfway through this read and the body count keeps mounting up with no one any closer to figuring out how these murders are being committed. The one thing that has become clear is that the democrats seem to be the targets. Well, all except for one republican who appears to be the victim of a copycat killer. All the other deaths appear to have been caused by the victims underlying medical conditions, so the question becomes how did the person or persons committing these murders use those underlying conditions to bring about the victims death?”

GrayNet

GrayNet by DS Kane

Cassandra Sashakovich quit spying for her country. To do this, she blackmailed the White House to get her boyfriend, Lee Ainsley, released from Gitmo. She also rescued a teenager, Ann Silbee, from homelessness. Now they’re all safe, so everything should slowly return to normal. But Lee and Ann hate each other. Worse still, all those she broke and mangled on her mad run to survive want revenge…

“This fourth book in the Spies Lie series by DS Kane was certainly a non-stop suspense-filled action-adventure,” writes John L in his 5-star review. “The reader just never knew who was going to be trying to kill Cassie the ex-spy or her family members, Lee and Ann. Some were attempts for revenge while others were attempts to hide betrayal and even treason and some others were to make a pile of money before they died. There were massive body counts along with some blood shed, but nothing really described in too vivid or gory detail. The story continually asked ‘would they ever be safe’ and that is for the reader to find out.”

“Full of action and thrills,” writes G.F. Bard in their 5-star review. “This is the fourth book in a series. However, it will stand alone and will not disappoint. I really enjoyed reading this book. Couldn’t put it down until it was finished. The characters are great. A must read. If you like mystery, thrills, suspense.”
