Whether you have children of your own, or you are just a kid at heart, I think we can all agree there is something so special about children’s literature. Hidden Gems ARC readers have been lucky enough lately to have had several fantastic kid’s books to choose from, and like all the other books we send to our subscribers, they were absolutely free. Today we have a round up of 5 popular children’s stories with important themes and uplifting messages that were enjoyed by our readers this winter.

Good News for Me!

Good News for Me by Brooke Kashou

With an incredible 4.9 average star rating on Amazon, Good News for Me! introduces children to foundational Christian truths in a simple and straightforward way, without leaving important details out.

Good New for Me is such a great story to tell the kids the Gospel in a kid-friendly way,” writes Mackenzie H. in her 5-star review. “Sometimes it’s hard to find the words to tell kids such a big concept like God, and this book makes it simple without taking away or watering down the heart of the Gospel Message! Well done!”

Katie says in her 5-star review, “This book was the perfect introduction to Christianity for my little one! Unfortunately, a lot of Christian content either fails to communicate important concepts in ways children can understand, or it leaves out fundamental truths that children need to learn. Good News for Me! is the first children’s book that I’ve found that manages to communicate the core truths of Christianity in a way that is accessible to young children (while also being beautiful and fun!). This book is a must buy for any Christ-centered family!”

Mia and Nattie

Mia and Nattie: One Great Team by Marlene M. Bell

In a read-aloud picture book for children who love animals, award-winning writer and sheep breeder Marlene M. Bell presents Nattie the lamb’s true story. Mia and Nattie is a heartwarming book, with an average 4.8 star rating on Amazon, that teaches readers about problem-solving, teamwork, and love.

“If you’re looking for a sweet book that teaches kids that their voice matters, that their perseverance pays off, and the power of love and friendship, this one is it!” writes Julie S. in her 5-star review. “During hard times, it is not easy to stay motivated and positive. Books like Mia and Nattie are so vital to read to our children right now, and always, really. Instilling a growth mindset in the littles is priceless, and is such a valuable lesson to learn early. What better way to teach perseverance than by reading a fun and happy story. Mia and Nattie is also a great story to read to differently-abled kids, empowering kids of all abilities to keep trying, and not to give up on their dreams or goals. This is a great book for a read-aloud with younger kids or a read-along with older kids.”

Katie P. writes in her 5-star review. “Mia and Nattie is an incredibly special book with vivid illustrations, engaging prose, and a fantastic theme. The story is adorable, well-written, and perfect as a picture book! The illustrations are bright, colorful, and engaging! This would make a great Christmas gift for a teacher, a young reader, or parents of young readers. Mia and Natalie are a perfect pair and I love that this story was inspired by a real-life Natalie! I took the opportunity to read this with my son who is 8 years old. We talked about the importance of love, compassion, and kindness. This is a wonderful picture book that is perfect for young readers, classrooms, and libraries!

Josie and the Scary Snapper

If you enjoyed The Dark by Lemony Snicket and Jon Klassen, Orion and the Dark by Emma Yarlett, or Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberly, Josie and the Scary Snapper is for you!

“I loved how Josie was empowered to face her fears and overcome them,” writes Laurie in her 5-star review. “An absolute delight to read with evocative imagery from both the words and illustrations. Sure to become a bedtime hit for both kids and parents.”

Samantha N. writes in her 5-star review, “The images in the book are amazing! A great story for children who are afraid of the dark. This is such an adorable book, that can help children learn that things aren’t always as scary as they look.”

The Troubled Troll

The Troubled Troll by C.T. Walsh

Hidden Gems favorite C.T. Walsh, provides us with another of his children’s stories sure to become an instant fave. The Troubled Troll can help teach children how to relax when the thoughts inside their heads take up too much space. The catchy, rhyming prose makes it a fun story to read aloud. The colorful illustrations won’t disappoint, either.

“Quick, cute, funny and full of meaning,” writes Travina in her 5-star review. “What a perfect poetic way to teach troubles away. Easy to understand and vibrant illustrations to catch the eye. Right on point for kids. Enjoyable.”

“A book that can be enjoyed by anyone,” writes Buddypallady in their 5-star review. “This one is a cute simple story that even adults can learn a lesson from. It has an important message wrapped up into a story that both boys and girls will love. The pictures that go along with the story definitely add to it.”

Merlin Raj and the Love Me Not Race

Merlin Raj and the Love Me Not Race by D.G. Priya

Each book in the series introduces a new programming skill. If you or your child like delightful dog tales that explore universally positive themes, including empathy, kindness, dedication, and the importance of being true to one’s self, then you’ll love Merlin Raj and the Love Me Not Race.

Samantha N. writes in her 5-star review, “A great book filled with positivity and good vibes! This is a great book for any child interested in coding. There are numerous lessons that readers of all ages can learn.”

Our Town Book Reviews writes in their 5-star review, “Rarely do I use actions to write a review. This time though, I’m just going to tell you what I did when I finished Merlin Raj and the Love Me Not Race. I ran straight into my better half’s office and said, ‘why didn’t we ever have such books when we were kids’. I wondered why we didn’t have books to discuss the difficult things that we all must endure. Mental and physical disabilities, illness, disease, well this could go on and on.

What I’m saying is that through the eyes of a family and a ‘cute as a button’ service dog named Merlin, we hear both problems and solutions. There are many things covered here but the main one happens to be about running a race with a disability. This isn’t just about a boy with a disability though, this is about a dad with a little too much weight around his middle, a brother with a sprained ankle. It even covers binary logic or at least the dog does :)”
