Self-Improvement Books To Help Ring in the New Year
For most people, the holiday season is filled with baked goods and indulgences. When it comes time to make (and fulfill) New Year resolutions, we are certain that there’s a self-help book out there for you within this broad category. With those thoughts in mind, today we’ve rounded up the self-improvement books our Hidden Gems readers loved the most recently.
CDL Minded Business Startup Strategy Collection by Joe Ryder and Eric Balma
With 120+ ratings and a 4.8 star average on Amazon, CDL Minded Business Startup Strategy Collection covers the essentials you need to start your own trucking business.
Lee N. writes in his five star Amazon review, “This is a great book for any entrepreneur interested in getting into the CDL business. The author also goes into detail in helping you set your goals and changing your mindset on how to work smarter and not just harder. Mr. Ryder does a great job of explaining the ‘ideas’ of the business all the way through actually running the business. This book is a MUST HAVE For anyone looking to get into the CDL business.”
Joshua D. concurs in his five star Amazon review, “If you’re looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, this book is not for you. However, if you’re interested in learning about a potentially lucrative industry with plenty of opportunities for those who are willing to put in the work, then CDL Minded Business Startup Strategy Collection is definitely worth your time. The author provides readers with an inside look at the world of CDL trucking, sharing helpful tips and actionable plans for starting and growing a successful business in this field. I especially appreciate the focus on working smarter rather than harder – something that is all too often overlooked in the business world. While there is no guarantee of success in any venture, I believe that following the advice in this book gives you a much better chance of achieving success than going in blind. If you’re at all interested in the CDL trucking industry, I highly recommend giving this book a read.”
Burnout Diaries by Janna Donovan
With 20+ ratings and a 4.8 star average, Burnout Diaries: How Work Stress Almost Killed Me is a relatable tale of burnout, with a twist. The author was experiencing burnout in a foreign country as a marketing manager, and her title is much more than the average work how-to book. Take note, some of our reviewers noted the weight of topics discussed, as well as mention of suicidal thoughts.
“…The Burnout Diaries is not about just sucking it up; Janna wants to help people get better,” Amber W. raves in her five star Amazon review. “It focuses more on mental and physical health and how important that is to keep going. Janna does an excellent job describing the wide range of emotions I (and others) have felt during burnout, from guilt to depression to stubborn optimism that things will get better with time. Her account is well crafted, using a mixture of diary entries, emails, and even blog posts from her husband, Dave. Honestly, I couldn’t get enough, I devoured this book in an afternoon, and it left me wanting more. It was a bit emotionally draining to read, mainly because it hit so close to home, and I felt like I was going through my burnout again. There are some weighty topics (such as thoughts of suicide) and longer passages about God and her spirituality. That being said, it was very needed: oddly enough, this book helped me get closure, which I did not know I needed. Overall I highly recommend this book to anyone who has experienced or is experiencing work stress/burnout. I suggest reading this book to any working adult who has had a difficult job or two or is unsure of their place.”
“This is a timely account of how a high-achieving young woman gets her dream job only to discover that she is not going to get the resources she needs to be successful,” Kathleen S. writes in her five star Amazon review. “As the stress builds up, she is determined to push harder until she reaches the breaking point. Luckily, she finds the counseling and support she needs and comes out with real insight into what went wrong and how to manage work stress. Although the events described in Donovan’s book happened years ago, it provides helpful insights into the work stress issues we are facing today. I recommend this book to the successful women I know. It gives sound advice without condescending or offering simplistic solutions to the real complexities of managing work stress.”
The New Parent’s Guide to Baby Sleep Training by Natalie Baker
With 10+ ratings and a 4.8 star average, this is a hidden gem for sleep deprived parents. Sleep deprivation and parenthood goes hand in hand, but Natalie Baker has firsthand experience and techniques which will help instill positive habits in your baby.
Book Lover writes in their five star Amazon review, “I picked up this book as a grandparent who wanted to help my son and his wife with their new baby. My youngest son had sleeping issues for a long time when he was a baby and toddler. This book would have made a world of difference had I had it at that time. I found this book on a book blog and I am anxious to share it with my son.”
“Coming from a parent of four, this book can help the littles (and the parents) get better sleep…” Jessica M. raves in her five star Amazon review.
Tap Talk, Tidbits, and Tips for Dilettante Tappers by Bernard M. Patten
With 25+ ratings and a 4.8 star average, this book is for those who are looking for new ways to sharpen their mind, and have fun. Dr. Patten enlightens the reader to the power of tap to help your heart, mind, and body.
Jeff D. writes in his five star Amazon review, “I got this book on a whim to try some tap dancing with my grandkids, and I must admit… We had so much FUN! The book gave enough information without being so dry and technical it killed the fun, and I was able to get us started as a little hobby to stay fit (for me) and burn some energy (for them). It even inspired them to want to join up for classes.”
“Very beginner friendly!” Joshua L. shares in his five star Amazon review. “I always wanted to try tap-dancing, it looks easy but it’s super hard. This book has really helpful tips and techniques in tap dancing that are very easy to follow, it explains how tap dancing doesn’t only use the body but also the mind. Great book! Very well researched!”
Apotheosis Now by Yanhao Huang
With 365+ ratings and a 4.4 average star rating, Apotheosis Now helps readers resolve confusion and find fulfillment and enlightenment.
“…Opening this quiet, contemplative, deeply meaningful book is a life changing experience,” Grady H. shares his experiences in his five star Amazon review. “‘Apotheosis’ is defined as a model of excellence or perfection, having no equal. That is the goal set for us by the author. In a gentle, supportive, yet authoritative manner Huang goes right to the core of our being, placing the profound questions of life before us: ‘What is the meaning of life? What is the nature of existence? Who am I? How do I get what I want? What do I even want? Is there a God? What is truth?’ He adds that the purpose of his book is ‘to break the existing belief system you have built to unveil a much greater intelligence that’s already within you, so that this intelligence can flourish and start to operate your life.’ Offering a ‘review’ or opinion of this book is perhaps unfair: the true value and enrichment to be found in reading and absorbing this guide is a personal journey for every open reader…Refreshing and enlightening, this little book is a treasure…”
Ivana S. concurs in her five star Amazon review, “…The author guided me on a journey of self-discovery and pushed me to question things I took for granted. I would totally recommend reading Apotheosis Now: Rabbit Hole to the Beyond, by Yanhao Huang; it is a reading that opens minds and makes us think outside the box– something for which I really thank the author. The book is well-written and complete; and although it is not difficult to understand, I recommend reading it (or some parts) more than once. I gained much from this reading, and this is why I recommend it to readers of all genres.”
